Source Water

The source of drinking water (both tap and bottled water) includes rivers, Lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels Over the surface of land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-Occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick Up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human Activity.
The source of drinking water for the Wheeling area is the Ohio River. Water drawn from the Ohio River is pumped into our water treatment facility where it is carefully treated, filtered and disinfected to ensure a safe product for our customers.
In addition to the Ohio River, there are five wells located near the Plant that may be utilized as an alternate source of water in the event the Ohio River becomes contaminated due to a spill. These wells are treated the same way as the river water and can provide approximately 50% of the average daily usage.
